A Physical Relationship between Electron-proton Temperature Equilibration and Mach Number in Fast Collisionless Shocks
نویسندگان
چکیده
The analysis of Balmer-dominated optical spectra from non-radiative (adiabatic) SNRs has shown that the ratio of the electron to proton temperature at the blast wave is close to unity at vS .400 km s , but declines sharply down to the minimum value of me/mp dictated by the jump conditions at shock speeds exceeding 2000 km s . We propose a physical model for the heating of electrons and ions in non-cosmic ray dominated, strong shocks (vS > 400 km s ) wherein the electrons are heated by lower hybrid waves immediately ahead of the shock front. These waves arise naturally from the cosmic ray pressure gradient upstream from the shock. Our model predicts a nearly constant level of electron heating over a wide range of shock speeds, producing a relationship (Te/Tp)0 ∝ v S (∝ M) that is fully consistent with the observations. Electron-Ion Temperature Equilibration at Collisionless Shocks in Supernova Remnants
The topic of this review is the current state of our knowledge about the degree of initial equilibration between electrons, protons and ions at supernova remnant (SNR) shocks. Specifically, the question has been raised as to whether there is an inverse relationship between the shock velocity and the equilibration similar to the relationship between equilibration and Alfvén Mach number seen in i...
متن کاملA critical Mach number for electron injection in collisionless shocks.
Electron acceleration in collisionless shocks with arbitrary magnetic field orientations is discussed. It is shown that the injection of thermal electrons into the diffusive shock acceleration process is achieved by an electron beam with a loss cone in velocity space that is reflected back upstream from the shock through the shock drift acceleration mechanism. The electron beam is able to excit...
متن کاملBalmer-Dominated Spectra of Nonradiative Shocks in the Cygnus Loop, RCW 86 and Tycho Supernova Remnants
We present an observational and theoretical study of the optical emission from nonradiative shocks in three supernova remnants: the Cygnus Loop, RCW 86 and Tycho. The spectra of these shocks are dominated by collisionally excited hydrogen Balmer lines which have both a broad component caused by proton-neutral charge exchange and a narrow component caused by excitation of cold neutrals entering ...

We present the first laboratory generation of high-Mach-number magnetized collisionless shocks created through the interaction of an expanding laser-driven plasma with a magnetized ambient plasma. Time-resolved, two-dimensional imaging of plasma density and magnetic fields shows the formation and evolution of a supercritical shock propagating at magnetosonic Mach number M_{ms}≈12. Particle-in-c...
متن کاملOblique Ion Two-Stream Instability in the Foot Region of a Collisionless Shock
Electrostatic behavior of a collisionless plasma in the foot region of high Mach number perpendicular shocks is investigated through the two-dimensional linear analysis and electrostatic particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation. The simulations are double periodic and taken as a proxy for the situation in the foot. The linear analysis for relatively cold unmagnetized plasmas with a reflected proton be...
